| SpiritRock Shop |
| Opal Fluorite Opal fluorite is a very rare stone of aesthetic and colorful patterns. These come from only one place on earth, the Brush Wellman beryllium mines area near Delta, Utah. This area is now closed to collectors. Tiffany Stone is composed of predominantly Opalized Fluorite (blues, purples and whites) often mixed with many other minerals such as quartz, chalcedony, dolomite, rhodonite, manganese oxides (blacks), bertrandite (white, yellow or pink) that contains the mineral beryllium {which is what the miners were looking for to make missile nose cones as the material does not heat up at high speeds}, beryl, solid white or translucent-yellowish opal and many other surprises. Not only are the Tiffany Stones rare because of their single source location, but also because so few ever made it out of the mines without being crushed for their beryllium content. The stones wind up in the overburden (mining leftovers) and go through the ore crusher to extract sometimes as little as 1 to 2% beryllium. In case you haven't got the picture yet, this stuff is not coming out of the mines any more, there is no other place on earth to get it and when it's gone ...It's gone. This is one of those items that you can't wait too long to buy or you might not get a specimen for your collection. From what we saw in late summer 2008, there is precious little of this unique stone left and sources for new stone are rare if any as mine operations policies have been tightened. Our 2010 trip saw less available and much higher prices. Our 2011 trip saw prices doubled and tripled from last years prices. Pieces we have recently sold here in the $1K range are now selling in the $3k range! Our friend Todd has closed up his workshop at his store and now does all his cutting and polishing at home. We found a supposed source seller which turned out to be a really 3rd rate brecciated conglomerate with some purple color mixed in. Beware of Cheap Imitations! |
